Into The Theatre: 3DGS for Theatre Design
Abstract
3D Gaussian Splatting is a 3D scanning and rendering tool that creates a photorealistic 3D rendering of a space from a set of 2D images. One of the current limitations of 3DGS is that the scenes are static and immovable. My project aims to make 3DGS scenes interactive. By using controls to teleport, walk, and grab objects, and a menu to add and remove lights and change light settings, I have built a prototype app for theatre designers to manipulate the stage in virtual reality. This promising theatre design app will help theatre creatives save time while hanging lights by being more accurate, realistic, and immersive than existing design apps.
Controls teleport, walk, and point a laser to grab objects, like this feather duster.
A textbox reading "Annotation" pops up from a small cube.
A popup menu controls settings and adds lights.
A colour wheel and sliders change light colours.
A joystick and sliders move the light, which snaps to the overhead grid.
A rotating cylinder and sliders change the light angle.
Sliders change the light's cone angle and edge hardness.
A dropdown menu navigates home.
